The 7-Day Screen Swap: one moment at a time
Why banning screens backfires, and the day-by-day plan that works instead, starting with the moment that hurts the most.

Most screen-time plans fail on day three, because they try to change the whole day at once. The 7-Day Screen Swap changes one moment, then lets the win spread on its own.
The rule: swap, don’t ban
Kids don’t miss the tablet, they miss what it gives them: something to do, a feeling of progress, a small win. If you take it away and leave a gap, the gap wins. If you fill the gap first, the tablet loses its grip.
The 7 days
- Day 1 · Watch. Note when the screen fights happen. Don’t change anything yet.
- Day 2 · Pick your moment. The one that hurts most. After school is the most common.
- Day 3 · Set the stage. Before that moment, open a page on the table. Snack next to it.
- Day 4 · Ten minutes, then free. One page, then they can choose. Most kids keep going.
- Day 5 · Let them lead. Ask them which page comes next. Ownership beats instructions.
- Day 6 · Add a second moment. The car, or the wait before dinner.
- Day 7 · Celebrate. Count the pages on the map together. Put one on the fridge.

What to expect
Days 1 to 3 feel like extra work. Day 4 is usually the turning point: the page is there, the snack is there, and they sit down without being asked. By day 7, the switch-off moment has a new habit attached to it.
If a day goes wrong
Skip it, not the plan. Tomorrow the page is on the table again. Consistency matters more than perfection, and one bad evening doesn’t erase four good ones.
