The lamp hour: bedtime without “one more episode”
Screens and bedtime don’t mix. A calm, ten-minute page under the lamp does the job a show used to do, without the fight at the end.

“One more episode” is the most expensive sentence of the evening. It pushes bedtime, winds them up, and ends with the same switch-off fight, just later.
Why a page works better than a show at bedtime
- It has an end. A page finishes. An episode autoplays.
- It slows the brain down. Counting, tracing and finding things is calm focus, not fast reward.
- It’s time together. You read one line, they do the rest. Ten quiet minutes side by side.
The lamp hour routine
- Screens off at the bedroom door. The tablet sleeps in the kitchen, every night, no debate.
- Warm lamp, big light off. The room tells them the day is ending.
- One page, in bed. Ten minutes, then the map, then lights out.

Little ones (3 to 5)
Choose the easiest pages for bedtime: spot the difference, count the shells, color a path. Save the harder logic pages for the morning, when they have energy to spare.
Big kids (10 and up)
Bedtime is when phones do the most damage. Agree on a phone parking spot outside the bedroom, and leave a puzzle on the nightstand instead. A timed challenge they can beat tomorrow is a great reason to go to sleep.
