The screen-free road trip: a plan for the first hour
Mess-free pages, a pencil game for two and a plan for the first hour of the drive, so the back seat stays calm all the way to Grandma’s.

The first hour decides the whole drive. If the tablet comes out at mile one, it stays out until arrival, and the battery dies an hour before you get there.
Pack the back seat like a classroom
- A clipboard each: it turns any lap into a desk.
- Pencils, not markers. No caps, no stains, no tears.
- The workbook in the seat-back pocket, so they can reach it alone.
- Snacks in the middle, one bag for both.

The first-hour plan
- Minutes 0 to 20: one page each. Mazes and spot-the-difference work best in a moving car.
- Minutes 20 to 40: a game for two: who finds the hidden word first, who solves the code.
- Minutes 40 to 60: snack, music, looking out the window. Boredom is allowed.
When to bring out the screen
You don’t have to ban it. Keep it for the last stretch, or for traffic jams. When the screen is the exception instead of the default, it stops being the fight.
Motion sickness tip
If your kid feels sick reading in the car, choose pages with big pictures and short tasks, and take a window break between pages.
